Continuation Options

Continuation Notification

Employees retiring from OUSD will receive a letter from the Insurance Department which will include information regarding medical, dental, vision, and voluntary plan continuation options within 14 days from the date of the coverage termination.

Medical Continuation

Retired On or After 07/01/18

(excluding 2017-2018 SERP participants)

Employees who retire from PERS / STRS, may qualify for a portable retirement incentive of $500/month, until age 65 or upon enrollment in Medicare, through a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). Eligible retirees:

  • May not continue enrollment in any District-sponsored plan

AND

  • Must be age 55+ with 20 or more cumulative years of regular service to the District; OR
  • Must be age 60+ with 10 or more cumulative years of regular service to the District

If the retiree does not meet the qualifications above, then he/she will be offered COBRA continuation coverage (Please see the Insurance Benefits Packet for more information about COBRA continuation).

Retired On or Before 06/30/18

(including 2017-2018 SERP participants)

Age <65 / Not Medicare-Eligible

Retirees may continue enrollment in their current medical, dental, and/or vision plans at their own expense. Retirees may qualify for a stipend of $150/month towards their District-sponsored medical plan's premium if they are:

  • Age 55+ with 20 or more cumulative years of regular service to the District
  • Retired from PERS / STRS
  • Not Medicare-eligible

Age 65+ / Medicare-Eligible

Retirees who are Medicare-eligible cannot continue enrollment in a District-sponsored medical plan; however, the retiree can continue their dental and/or vision coverage through the District at their own expense.
